The beginning

In the beginning, life was good for Sarah Winchester. She was born in the late 1830’s in New Haven, Connecticut. She was very gorgeous, talented, and played many instruments. She had been raised by a well off family. Sarah Winchester was very liked by everyone in the town.

Next chapter in life

In 1862, Sarah Winchester married a man named William Winchester. The founder of the Winchester gun that won over the west. They became very rich. In 1866, Sarah gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Annie, and life couldn’t have been better for her.

Tragedy strikes

Sarah’s daughter Annie died as an infant and Sarah had no other children. Sarah was devastated and almost driven to insanity by the loss. In 1881, her husband William was diagnosed with Tuberculosis and died. However, Sarah Winchester received billions of dollars for her husbands gun and his death.

Seeking help

Sarah Winchester then went to Boston to seek help from a medium. The medium told Sarah that her family was being haunted and cursed by the spirits of the people who the Winchester riffle killed. The medium suggested that she move to the west coast and buy a house and never stop construction on it. And that’s just what she did.

The house

Sarah Winchester moved all the way to San Jose, California and bought an 8 bedroom house. She had millions of dollars put into the house rebuilding and reconstructing. The house. The house had staircases that led to the ceiling, windows in the floor, and doors that opened up to walls. It was built this way to confuse the spirits. Every night, Sarah would sleep in a different room to confuse the spirits.

The 1906 earthquake

In 1906, there was a big earthquake. At the time, Sarah Winchester was in her favorite bedroom, a daisy one. She was trapped in the room for several hours after the earthquake. Her servants had to get her out with a crow bar. Sarah took this as a warning that she had spent too much time and money on this section of the house and ordered it to be torn apart and reconstructed somewhere else.

The end

Sarah Winchester died in September of 1922 in her early eighties. When her construction crew found out, all construction was ended immediately.

The house now

Now there are over 160 rooms in the house including half finished ones and even nails all over the place. It is however a very popular tourist sight. Its known as the Winchester mystery house. Some people swear its haunted, but I guess that’s one thing we’ll never know.
